Jan Smit is the new chairman of FC Volendam, the club announced via the official channels. The folk singer will be the successor of Piet Kemper, who after three years gives up on the other the Dutch† Smit already worked at Volendam as commercial director, but is now moving on to the role of chairman.

Initially, Smit was reluctant to take on the chairmanship due to his current job as commercial director. The folk singer indicated that he was not yet done with his current position, but has nevertheless accepted the job as chairman in the interest of the club. “”Although this was not my plan, I am there for the club where the club thinks it needs me. Next year I will celebrate my tenth anniversary here, then this is just dessert”, says Smit on the club site of the brand new PhD student.

Kemper is delighted with the appointment of his successor. “In our search for a suitable signboard with board experience, after a number of discussions with our Supervisory Board, we soon came to the conclusion that we didn’t have to look far. Jan has by far the most board experience of anyone at the club and is our best-known ambassador,” explains the outgoing chairman. “That is why we have asked him to resign from his commercial directorship to start as chairman from next season.”

Volendam will be promoted to the Eredivisie this season after securing second place in the Kitchen Champion Division. The club will therefore play at the highest level in the Netherlands for the first time in thirteen years. However, Volendam had to leave the title to FC Emmen, which with one round to play can no longer be traced for ‘the eel club’.
