André Onana immediately disappears from the goal at Ajax, reports The Telegraph† According to the newspaper, Erik ten Hag will choose Maarten Stekelenburg in the final of the TOTO KNVB Cup on Sunday, if the 39-year-old routine remains fit in the coming days. Onana, who will leave on a free transfer, probably played his last match for Ajax against Sparta Rotterdam (2-1 win) last Saturday.

André Onana’s new mistake in Ajax’s goal clearly did not do his confidence in Ten Hag any good, as the coach already showed last Saturday immediately after the duel with Sparta. Prior to that, Onana had been declared ‘undisputed number one’, but after the game Ten Hag said: “Well… that is…”, the coach stammered, shaking his head. “I think we have a good goalkeeper file, that’s clear. There is competition there.”

Stekelenburg returned to the match selection against Sparta on Saturday, after the experienced goalkeeper suffered a serious hip injury at the end of August. Stekelenburg hasn’t played a game since August 28, but Ten Hag gives the experienced closing post confidence in the cup final without any match rhythm. Ajax has been struggling with a goalkeeper problem in recent months, because Remko Pasveer suffered a broken finger and Jay Gorter was also out for some time. Gorter is now fit again, Pasveer is on his way back.
