Cody Gakpo seems to be on his way to the exit at PSV, now that several European superpowers seem to be interested in the captain of the Eindhoven team. Reporter Mounir Boualin spoke at a Life After Football event with Mario Been, Pierre van Hooijdonk and Denny Landzaat and asked the trio for their opinion on the possible transfer of Gakpo and his successor.

Gakpo has been a regular topic of conversation in the Netherlands in recent weeks. This is how it reported Eindhovens Dagblad that Arsenal has a concrete interest in the PSV attacker and there have been rumors for some time about a possible switch to Bayern Munich. Been has an idea about the succession of Gakpo: “Bergwijn, we just arranged that”, he says with some humor.

He discusses Gakpo’s potential transfer in a more serious tone: “These kind of guys should especially look at the opportunity to play”. The fact that the former trainer appoints Bergwijn as Gakpo’s successor is mainly a warning for the PSV player not to end up in the same situation. Bergwijn does not play as much as he would like after his transfer to Tottenham Hotspur. Van Hooijdonk is also still critical of a possible transfer to the European top: “I think Gakpo is a great player, but I also think it is too early.” Although he also emphasizes that the choice for a switch is not only with the captain himself: “PSV has to sell something every year.” Landzaat is more nuanced: “What is too early? If he feels good, you have to respect that.”

The opinions of the three gentlemen are also divided about possible successors. “Why not Bergwijn?”, Been responds to the questioning look of reporter Mounir. “He has to play with his potential every week.” Pi-Air Been’s proposal gently laughs away: “He didn’t go to Ajax for the salary. Then it seems to me that he will go to PSV.” Landzaat goes one step further and mentions an even more surprising name: Mohamed Ihattaren. “He played for PSV for years. It was a difficult combination with the previous trainer… No , I’m just kidding, it would be a difficult situation to go back to PSV.”
