UEFA has taken Spartak Moscow out of the Europa League. BILD reports that the European Football Association has drawn a line through the diptych with RB Leipzig in the eighth final, which means that those Roten Bullen advance to the quarterfinals without playing. Spartak – where Quincy Promes is under contract – was the only Russian participant in the European club tournaments.

Spartak qualified as the winner of a group with Napoli, Leicester City and Legia Warsaw for the eighth final of the Europa League. During the draw for the eighth final last Friday, the number nine of the Premjer Liga was linked to RB Leipzig, which settled with Real Sociedad in the intermediate round of the Europa League. RB Leipzig would play at home on March 10, after which the return was on the program a week later.

RB Leipzig announced last weekend that it was in close contact with UEFA about the eighth final against Spartak. It had already been decided that as a result of the Russian attack on Ukraine, Spartak was in any case not allowed to play in Russia, but had to look for neutral ground to complete the home game of the diptych. The Russian club would have thought of Yerevan (Armenia) or Baku (Azerbaijan), but UEFA has now decided to draw a line by meeting in the eighth final of the Europa League.

“We remain in close contact with the unions and have confidence in UEFA and their decision. We assume that the matches will be cancelled,” Oliver Mintzlaff told RB Leipzig on behalf of RB Leipzig BILD† According to the German newspaper, UEFA has decided not to insert a new club in the eighth final, but to grant RB Leipzig direct passage towards the quarterfinals.
