The selection of Bahia was startled last night by a brutal attack. The Brazilian second division team was on its way to the duel with Sampo Corrêa when a bomb exploded under the team bus. Goalkeeper Danilo Fernandes suffered serious injuries after he got a glass shard in his eye. Despite the drama, Bahia managed to pull off the showdown with Sampo Corrêa: the club won 2-0.
“The most disturbing case is that of Danilo Fernandes,” Bahia tweeted, adding photos of blood spatter on the seats and bullet shards in the bus’s casing. “He was hit in the face by shrapnel and taken to hospital.” The goalkeeper spent a night there. Bahia coach Guto Ferreira indicated that if Fernandes had not gone to hospital, he would have probably lost his sight. Left back Matheus Bahia still suffered a few cuts in the arm, the rest of the passengers escaped unscathed.

The Brazilian sports medium Globoesporte reports that the attack was probably planned by extremist supporters of Sampo Corrêa. Other media are talking about an action by Bahia’s own supporters. The supporters are said to be frustrated with the club’s relegation from Serie A last season. Bahia eventually decided to play the game with Sampo Corrêa despite the incident, which was rewarded with a 2-0 win.
