Borussia Mönchengladbach mourns the tragic death of 20-year-old youth player Jordi Bongard. The defender was killed in a serious car accident on Wednesday, the club announced. Bongard joined Gladbach’s youth academy in 2012 as a 13-year-old and has played in the Under 23 since the 2020/21 season.
We heard the terrible news this morning and we are stunned,” sporting director Roland Virkus told Gladbach’s club website. “Our deepest condolences and thoughts go out to Jordi’s family.” The current number thirteen of the Bundesliga says Bongard will always be in the heart of everyone at Gladbach.

Following the tragic news of Bongard’s death, Gladbach canceled all training sessions and press conferences scheduled to be held on Thursday. Bongard, who has scored nine goals in 74 appearances for Gladbach’s Under-17, Under-19 and Under-23, was awarded his first professional contract in July last year. The centre-back has played in the Under-23s since the 2020/21 season, but played his last official game in May last year due to two serious injuries.
