Denzel Dumfries had to lose on Tuesday evening with Internazionale in the Champions League against Liverpool. There were only two shots on target in the entire game, both of which resulted in a goal. Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah were responsible for that in the last fifteen minutes: 0-2. However, Dumfries still sees plenty of opportunities to bowl the English out of the million-dollar ball next month.

“It is a real shame that we lost this game,” said Dumfries after the game in San Siro. “We not only fought as a team, but also played great football. We controlled the game to a large extent and dominated in possession. This defeat is therefore very difficult to digest,” said Dumfries, who was close to a goal in the second half.

“We certainly gave them a hard time,” Dumfries concluded. “Today it went wrong in the end, but we are going to Liverpool to fight and win.” Inter coach Simone Inzaghi, who took Dumfries and Stefan de Vrij to the side just before time, was also satisfied with his team’s game. “I’m proud of what we showed, especially in the first 25 minutes after the break. We played very well and deserved a goal.”

However, it was Liverpool that struck twice. “And yet I thought we played probably the best game of the season. Details make the difference at the top and Firmino’s goal turned out to be decisive,” said Inzaghi. “However, this performance should give us a lot of confidence. It promises a lot for the future if you can show this against one of the two best teams in Europe.”

Internazionale was initially linked to Ajax in the eighth finals. However, due to a technical error, the draw had to be over, after which Liverpool emerged as the opponent for the Italians. To reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time since the 2010/11 season, Inter must win the return at Anfield by big numbers. That game will be played on March 8.
