Alphonso Davies is sidelined for the time being. The defender is struggling with an inflammation of the heart muscle, Bayern Munich announced on Friday afternoon through the official channels. On behalf of the club, trainer Julian Nagelsmann says that Davies will not train for the time being, although the inflammation does not look ‘dramatic’. The issues came to light during a follow-up investigation after Davies contracted the coronavirus.

“We do a follow-up investigation with every player with corona Phonzy we saw signs of a mild form of myocarditis,” says Nagelsmann at the weekly press conference. “He is not training for the time being. He will not be available for the next few weeks. The inflammation did not look dramatic during the ultrasound, but he does need time to recover and that will take a while.” Davies missed the first game of the new calendar year (1-2 defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach) last week due to his corona infection.

The Canadian international also missed a match against TSG Hoffenheim (4-0 win) earlier in the season due to an upper leg injury, but continued to play in all competition matches. He has also appeared in five of the six group matches in the Champions League, but it seems unlikely that Davies will be available in a month’s time in the first game against Red Bull Salzburg in the eighth final of the Champions League. Omar Richards seems to be his designated replacement in the left back position.

Richards has rejoined the selection of Nagelsmann after a corona infection. The same goes for Manuel Neuer, Dayot Upamecano, Leroy Sané and Tanguy Nianzou. “They are not one hundred percent fit yet,” says Nagelsmann about the returned five. “Some of the five players had symptoms. They are back in the squad, but except manu nobody is fit enough for a base place”, he refers to the away match against FC Köln on Saturday. Corentin Tolisso has been struggling with an injury and a corona infection in recent weeks, but is fit again.
