Feyenoord and FSV De Feijenoorder have started a crowdfunding campaign to support Christian Gyan’s family. The former player of Feyenoord, among others, had been ill for some time and died on Wednesday at the age of 43. Gyan was under contract in De Kuip for ten years and managed to conquer the UEFA Cup with the Rotterdam club in 2002.

Gyan grew into a crowd favorite at Feyenoord in ten years. The news of his death hit the club and its supporters hard. FSV De Feijenoorder has therefore started a crowdfunding campaign in collaboration with Feyenoord, so that supporters can donate money to support the family. With the collected amount, the next of kin can pay the funeral costs and the money also goes to care for the family that Gyan leaves behind.

On the club site, Feyenoord announced on Wednesday that it was ‘with great sadness that it had learned of the death of Christian Gyan’. “At that time, he conquered many hearts of the legion. The little Ghanaian was not only extremely successful in his Feyenoord period by winning a national title (1999), the UEFA Cup (2002) and the Johan Cruijff Scale, he also grew into a cult hero and huge crowd favorite.”

After his career, Gyan had to deal with several setbacks, including financially. Due to a heavy debt load, the costs of a seriously ill son and his generosity, he got into financial difficulties. Seizures forced Gyan to stop working as well. At the end of November, Feyenoord said that there were plans for a suitable farewell to the Ghanaian in De Kuip. Sadly, that farewell will never come again.
