Royston Drenthe may take a step up in Spain in January. Opinion of Murcia writes that the 34-year-old midfielder Racing Murcia will most likely exchange for Real Murcia, although the switch is not yet completely finished. It would mean that after the winter break Drenthe will be active in Group 5 of the Segunda División RFEF, the fourth level of Spanish football.

Drenthe made the switch a year ago to Racing Murcia, which plays at the fifth level of Spanish football in the Tercera División RFEF. The single the Dutch international signed a new contract with Racing Murcia last summer, which means that he will be with the club until mid-2023. However, it now seems that Drenthe will make the switch to Real Murcia on a rental basis, local media report.

If Drenthe actually makes the switch to Real Murcia, he will be the fourteenth club in his career. The midfielder-cum-left back played for Feyenoord, Real Madrid, Hércules, Everton, Alania Vladikavkaz, Reading, Sheffield Wednesday, Kayseri Erciyesspor, Baniyas, XerxesDZB, Sparta Rotterdam and Kozak Boys before joining Racing Murcia. Now he must add experience to Real Murcia’s young squad in the second half of the season.

Real Murcia – which played another year in LaLiga in the 2007/08 season but then fell significantly – currently occupy fourth place in Group 5 of the Segunda División RFEF, five points behind league-leader La Nucía. The champion is promoted directly to the Primera División RFEF, while the numbers two to five play a play-off for promotion. Real Murcia and Racing Murcia are currently still negotiating the switch from Drenthe and are not yet fully settled, but it seems Opinion of Murcia strongly hopes that an agreement will be reached soon.
