Feyenoord and Jens Toornstra will continue together for longer. The 32-year-old midfielder, who has been playing for the Rotterdam team since 2014, has extended his contract by one year until mid-2023. Feyenoord also has an option for an extra year. Frank Arnesen, technical director of Feyenoord, believes that Toornstra is the personification of the club’s identity. “Indomitable, always at the forefront of battle, never forsaking.”

“Jens is a player who has been proving his worth for seasons,” Arnesen emphasizes Friday morning via the official channels of Feyenoord. “Not only on the field but also in the dressing room and in general as a model pro. Jens is a very versatile footballer who we are very happy with. So it’s great that he wants to stay at the club even longer.”

For Toornstra there was no doubt that he wanted to commit to Feyenoord for longer. “I have often said that I am really enjoying myself here and that I feel happy,” said the midfielder. “If you get the signal that the club also wants to continue with you, that’s very nice. In recent years I have had many successes with the club. I’ve had a very good time so far and I’m probably looking forward to many more years to come.”

Before coming to De Kuip, Toornstra was active for ADO Den Haag and FC Utrecht, among others. Since 2014, the four-time Dutch international has played no fewer than 292 official matches for Feyenoord 1. With that total, he remains just outside the top ten of all time, but he already has the number ten Patrick Paauwe (301 duels) in sight.

In his nearly 300 matches for Feyenoord, Toornstra has scored 63 goals so far and provided 57 assists. “For me, Jens can look back on an excellent first half of the season and also many excellent seasons at Feyenoord,” said Arne Slot last week prior to the competition match with sc Heerenveen. “He is always there when the team or the club needs him. Jens is a valuable player on the field, but off the field also with all the experience he has.”
