Telstar barely reached the next round of the TOTO KNVB Cup on Tuesday evening. For a long time there seemed to be nothing in the air the White Lions, but in the final phase the amateurs of Spakenburg managed to turn a 3-1 deficit into a 3-3 draw. After extra time, Telstar still came out on top: 5-3. Spakenburg ended the game with ten men.

Andries Jonker’s team made the favorites role clear from minute one. After Telstar had already wasted four decent chances, Yassine Zakir gave his team the lead in the 25th minute with a watched shot. The difference in power between the two parties was large: nobody had seen the equalizer coming after 38 minutes. Floris van der Linden, former Telstar striker, was in exactly the right place to extend a free kick by Vince Gino Dekker: 1-1. The home side soon repaired the damage. Eight minutes before half-time, Gyliano van Velzen scored a goal from a cross by Zakir.

Delvechio Blackson further shaped the dominance early in the second half. After two attempts, the midfielder tapped in for the 3-1 in the third opportunity. Control seemed to be back with Telstar, but just like in the first act, Spakenburg came out of nowhere with the connecting goal. Again it was Van der Linden who was a burden to his old club: the striker reacted attentively to the weak position of the Telstar defence. The visitors suddenly started to believe and it paid off. Ten minutes before time, Dekker once again gave the lead; substitute Lars van Zundert made the bank cheer by putting his toe against it

Spakenburg made frantic attempts at the 3-4 and Telstar was lucky that it was allowed to extend. However, the breather did the men of Jonker visibly good. Immediately after the interruption, Telstar straightened up and scored the liberating 4-3 via a header by Jip Molenaar. The hopes of the visitors seemed to have come to an end when Joël Amakodo received his second yellow card. Still, Spakenburg made it very difficult for Telstar, although the amateurs were no longer able to come alongside. Rashaan Fernandes even made it 5-3 after 113 minutes after a mistake by Leon ter Wielen.
