ADO Den Haag qualified for the next round in the TOTO KNVB Cup on Tuesday evening with all possible effort. The team of trainer Ruud Brood, who was in home isolation as a precaution after contact with an infected person, made up for a deficit twice against the amateurs of VV Gemert: 4-2. Willem den Dekker took both goals on behalf of the visitors, while ADO substitute Thomas Verheydt was of great value with two goals in the last quarter of the game.
ADO did not start at full war strength and had Verheydt and Sem Steijn start on the bench. There were basic places for Daryl Janmaat and Elia. For Janmaat, it was his first minutes of play since May 13, when he was substituted after just under an hour in the home game against Willem II. ADO was by far the better team in the first half, but failed to break the wall of the third divisionist. The first time the visitors crossed the center line, it was an instant hit.
Den Dekker broke through on the right side of the field on the stroke of half-time and outwitted Luuk Koopmans in two instances by shooting the ball high into the roof of the goal: 0-1. In the run-up to the goal, Janmaat had already hit the bar with a header and Elia shot just wide. The score was equalized on the stroke of half-time by the same Elia, who took advantage of a rebound after goalkeeper Stefan Tielemans had to free a header from Samy Bourard from a corner: 1-1. Assistant coach Giovanni Franken felt compelled to intervene at halftime and brought in Ricardo Kishna and Verheydt, among others.
The latter claimed a leading role in the second half with two hits, but had to watch as the visitors first took the lead for the second time. Again Den Dekker was in the right place to finish: 1-2. In the last quarter of the game, the vices were tightened by ADO, which still gave the team a place in the eighth finals. Substitute Cain Seedorf made it 2-2 with a shot from the edge of the box, after which Verheydt executed the sentence for the team from the Kitchen Champion Division. First he hit after a transfer from Vicente Besuijen, after which the same Besuijen provided the assist for the 4-2 five minutes later.
