December is traditionally a busy football month: the last Eredivisie matches of the calendar year, the climax of the matches in the group stage of the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League and of course also the TOTO KNVB Cup Tournament! The poster for this cup round is the squatter between FC Twente and Feyenoord. The teams of Ron Jans and Arne Slot are of course in the upper echelons of the Eredivisie and will meet for the fifth time in the history of the TOTO KNVB Cup. The balance of those five matches is in favor of the Tukkers, although the last meeting, the semi-final in the 2009/10 season, was lost by the team from Enschede (2-1 in De Kuip). FC Twente has had a hard time in cup matches with Eredivisionists in recent seasons: only one of those last seven encounters was won within 90 minutes. Feyenoord, on the other hand, is a real cup fighter: since the 2015/16 season, the Rotterdam team has won 24 of the 27 matches in the cup, at least five more than any other team.

Lovers of goals should sit down for the duel between Ajax and BVV Barendrecht. In the past five editions of the cup tournament, the Amsterdam club scored more often than any other team and Ajax averaged 3.3 goals per game in that period (70 in 21 matches). That average is even better against amateur teams: all 28 cup encounters with amateurs were won, while Ajax even scored 5.4 times per 90 minutes in those matches (151 goals in total). Barendrecht will hope that trainer Erik ten Hag will not take on his strongest eleven, because captain Dusan Tadic was directly involved in ten goals in his last ten cup matches (five goals, five assists), while no player has scored more since the 2016/17 year. in the TOTO KNVB Cup than Steven Berghuis (11 times, just like Oussama Idrissi).

The great thing about a cup tournament in which amateur teams are also active is of course that there is always a chance of a classic cup stunt. No fewer than eight amateur teams have qualified for the second round and apart from the confrontation between Achilles Veen and DVS ’33, they all compete with an opponent from professional football. For the best chance of a surprise, we will watch Velsen-Zuid on Tuesday evening: Telstar will then take on Spakenburg. The Blues already won in the first round with convincing figures from FC Dordrecht (3-0) and now hope to outwit the next team from the Kitchen Champion Division. This would make it the first amateur team to win two cup matches in a row against a professional football team since AFC in the 2018/19 season. That club also managed to beat Telstar at the time. Which also speaks in favor of Spakenburg: of all amateur teams that are still active in the TOTO KNVB Cup, Spakenburg most often eliminated an Eredivisie or Eerste Divisie team (seven times).
Stunt Spakenburg also visiting Telstar? This is the odds for a win for the amateurs.
