Besiktas recorded a hard-fought and much-needed victory on Sunday. The reigning champion played the first game since the departure of trainer Sergen Yalçin and fell behind twice, but won 4-2 against Kayserispor. Michy Batshuayi became the match winner by scoring the decisive goal. Thanks to the first win in six games, Besiktas climbs to seventh place.
Besiktas yearned for a win. The The Black Eagles have had to deal with blow after blow in recent months: only one of the last nine official matches has been won. In the Champions League, the club finished on zero points and this week the club management ruled that a change of trainers was necessary. Yalçin had to clear the field, which means that youth coach Önder Karaveli is now at the helm of the first team. Before the match, however, supporters chanted Yalçin’s name. At Kayserispor, the Dutch goalkeeper Kayserispor Bilal Bayazit sat on the bench.
However, Besiktas again failed to impress. The home team created few serious chances and fell behind eight minutes before the break. Mame Thiam convincingly headed into the right corner, after a sharp cross by Onur Bulut from the wing. Just before the break, the home team came alongside. After a bounce from Serdar Saatci from midfield, Cyle Larin successfully directed a header into the far corner. In the second half Besiktas nevertheless remained impotent and twenty minutes before the end things went wrong for the ailing superpower.
Kayserispor countered and after a turning in by Ibrahim Akdag from the right wing, Thiam made the 1-2 with his outstretched leg. Logically, Besiktas opened the hunt for the equalizer. A remarkable moment occurred when Miralem Pjanic took a free kick from great distance: the ball sailed over everything and everyone and hit the post. Not much later, Besiktas still made it 2-2: Batshuayi rounded off from close range after being served by Güven Yalcin. After a missed chance by Kayserispor, Besiktas was even allowed to counter for the 3-2 and Batshuayi was again the celebrated man. In the sixth minute of stoppage time, another counterattack via Yalçin, after preparatory work by Batshuayi, led to the 4-2.
