Steven Berghuis previewed the reunion with Feyenoord on Friday. In conversation with The Telegraph the attacker of Ajax discusses, among other things, the key to his success with the team from Amsterdam and indicates that he is grateful for the ‘rethinking’ of the club. “The staff has thought outside the box.”

Berghuis was taken over from Feyenoord last summer and under trainer Erik ten Hag the number 23 was initially posted in the right winger position. When Davy Klaassen was injured in mid-September, a solution had to be devised for the number ten position. What started as an experiment with Berghuis at ten, later turned out to be a success formula for Ajax. The 29-year-old the Dutch international is happy that he was given the opportunity as an attacking midfielder.

“I am grateful to the staff, who have thought outside the box, because before this everyone has only seen me as a right winger. I’ve always played there. I also scored my goal against Sporting from that side. But on ten I can also add things. Every player has certain qualities and then it is up to the trainers how they want to use them. I think this is a very nice idea,” Berghuis told the newspaper. He has already played 21 matches in the Ajax shirt and scored eight times, while providing seven assists.

Before the duel against the team from Rotterdam is scheduled for December 19, Ajax will first complete the duel in the TOTO KNVB Cup with Barendrecht and the Eredivisie match against AZ. Berghuis indicates that his focus is on AZ, although he is certainly looking forward to the meeting with Feyenoord. “I think it’s special to play against them, but the first game is with AZ, so that’s what the focus is on now. We look step by step”, concludes the Ajax player.
