Steven Bergwijn has indicated through his management that he is open to a transfer to Ajax, Mike Verweij knows. The journalist late in the podcast kick off by The Telegraph know Tottenham Hotspur has contacted the team from Amsterdam to confirm the interest in the wing attacker. In addition, Verweij does not agree with Rafael van der Vaart, who last Wednesday at Ziggo Sports said that he would advise Bergwijn against a transfer.

On Wednesday, the newspaper already announced that Ajax has officially reported to Tottenham for the the Dutch international. “That interest has been known to Bergwijn’s management for weeks, because that’s how it always goes,” Verweij says in the podcast. “Ajax will never let themselves down that they want to get a player and that player says: ‘All nice and nice, but I don’t want to go to Ajax at all.’ Management is always first contacted to ask what the player would be like if an attempt is made. Bergwijn has indicated that he likes Ajax in itself.”

“And now came the Spurs to Ajax with the question whether the interest in Bergwijn is serious. It has been answered in the affirmative. The Spurs have indicated that they have such a busy schedule until the winter break that no decision can be made yet. They cannot miss any players now and they will decide at a later stage,” said Verweij, who expects that Ajax will rent Bergwijn with a mandatory option to buy, if a deal with Tottenham is reached.

In the preview on the second Champions League evening of last week, Van der Vaart reacted reluctantly to Ajax’s interest in Bergwijn. “You can never guarantee a player that he will play, but if you bring Bergwijn from Tottenham to Ajax, he must play,” suggested the former midfielder. “The next question is only where he will play. You have Dusan Tadic in his position and on the right you have Antony and Berghuis, so they will only get Bergwijn because Sébastien Haller is going to the Africa Cup for a month. I think Bergwijn will do that.” shouldn’t want to.”

Verweij calls Van der Vaart’s words ‘gigantic weak’. “He has thought about it,” he says. But everyone knows that Haller is going to the Africa Cup, so what’s a logical replacement if they can’t make it to Brobbey? Then you could put Tadic in the striker and Bergwijn on the left winger. If he plays the pan of the roof against FC Utrecht and then also plays well against PSV, he will really get a lot of playing time. I do agree with him that Bergwijn will not be a basic player overnight, because he is not going to outplay Tadic. But he does have a big advantage: he can play left winger, right winger, in the striker and out of ten. I think it would be very logical if they did get him,” Verweij concludes.
