PSV was knocked out of the Europa League by Real Sociedad on Thursday evening. In the Basque Country, everything went wrong for Roger Schmidt’s team, who gave away two goals via a handball from Phillipp Mwene and a huge mistake by Érick Gutiérrez. Alexander Sörloth sealed the fate of PSV: 3-0. On top of that came the new hamstring injury for Noni Madueke and the red card for Ibrahim Sangaré. PSV must continue in the play-offs of the Conference League after the winter break, while Sociedad continues in the Europa League.

PSV entered a 4-3-3 formation, with Cody Gakpo as the occasional striker and Ritsu Doan and Bruma as wing tips. Mario Götze returned from injury as number ten. The first chance of the game was a big one after seventeen minutes. Alexander Isak escaped the guard of Olivier Boscagli with the ball at his foot and was able to continue towards Joël Drommel, who saved with the foot.

Then PSV made three serious attempts, which became increasingly dangerous. Sociedad goalkeeper Alex Remiro saved on Cody Gakpo and Phillipp Mwene’s shots and was helped by the crossbar with a brilliant shot from Bruma. Just before half-time, Sociedad scored a penalty when an attempt by Adnan Januzaj hit the arm of the sliding Mwene. Mikel Oyarzabal managed to put in the penalty: 1-0.

After the break, PSV again looked for openings, but no openings were found against the strongly grouped Basques. Things went wrong for the Eindhoven players after more than an hour of play, when Érick Gutiérrez had the ball wrested from an extremely dangerous position. Igor Zubeldia tapped the ball through to Oyarzabal, who fatally shot in: 2-0.

As if that wasn’t bad enough for PSV, Noni Madueke also had to leave the field injured. The attacker grabbed his hamstring less than six minutes after his substitute. To make matters worse, the Eredivisionist arrived fifteen minutes before time with ten men. Sangaré received his yellow card because he covered the face of Beñat Turrientes with his arm while shielding the ball. Sörloth made it 3-0 in injury time, by chasing the ball into the intersection with the left.
