Alex Pastoor will be the new trainer of Almere City FC, the club from the Kitchen Champion Division announced on Wednesday evening. He will be the successor of the dismissed Gertjan Verbeek, joins from the winter break and signs a contract for a season and a half. Almere City is currently in seventeenth place on the second level.

The choice for Pastoor is surprising, because Maurice Steijn seemed to have the best papers to become the new trainer. wrote last week The Telegraph that Steijn was on ‘pole position’ after a conversation with the club management. After all, the choice fell on Pastor; until the winter break, Almere City will be led by Tim Bakens, who will then assist the new trainer together with Hedwiges Maduro and Serge van den Ban.

Pastor last worked at SCR Altach. He was sacked from the Austrian club in February of this year after nearly two years of service. Pastoor, who also played for Altach as a football player, was then in last place in the Austrian Bundesliga. He also has experience as head coach of Excelsior, NEC, Slavia Prague, AZ (on an interim basis) and Sparta Rotterdam. He won promotions to the Eredivisie with Excelsior (2010) and Sparta (2016).

“Almere City is known as a fresh club with a healthy ambition. I am looking forward to an incredibly nice challenge”, the 55-year-old coach responds to his appointment. Technical manager Teun Jacobs states that Pastoor is known for his ‘innovative management style’. “He is a contemporary trainer, who we expect to get the most out of this selection and make our young trainers better. We are delighted that he has chosen our club.”
