Donny van de Beek will be in the starting line-up of Manchester United against Young Boys on Wednesday evening, trainer Ralf Rangnick confirms the day before the final group match in the Champions League. The midfielder also played from kick-off in the previous group match against Villarreal (0-2 win), but then had to make do with three short substitutes in the Premier League. He now gets a basic place for the first time under the new trainer Rangnick.

Manchester United are already certain of the group win, which probably makes it easier for Rangnick to rotate. Van de Beek is therefore not the only reserve player who gets a chance: under the bar Rangnick chooses Dean Henderson, who, according to the Manchester Evening News is in the interest of Ajax. At the press conference before the match against Young Boys, Rangnick is asked to elaborate on the situation of the two players. “To start with: they will both be in the starting line-up tomorrow. Donny has already come in on Sunday, while Dean is a very good and ambitious goalkeeper,” says the trainer.

Ajax would be interested in hiring Henderson. At the moment, however, Rangnick does not want to say goodbye to the 24-year-old keeper. He seems to see Henderson as his second choice behind David de Gea and emphasizes the importance of good reserve goalkeepers. “We definitely need two goalkeepers. We have three with Tom Heaton and Lee Grant is our fourth goalkeeper, although I would say we have three goalkeepers who qualify for the first team at the moment. I have already indicated that I get to know my players in the coming weeks.” Rangnick refers to statements made after his appointment: he emphasized that he wanted to use the coming weeks to get to know his selection ‘in detail’.

“I’m happy to have them all on the roster and I want to give them as much time as possible,” Rangnick said of the players who aren’t normally first on the scoresheet. “Everyone will have the chance to perform and show themselves. That’s why I’m happy to give playing time to quite a few other players tomorrow, to see how they perform under the pressure of a Champions League game with 75,000 spectators in a sold out stadium. This is a perfect opportunity to get to know the players, just like Saturday against Crystal Palacce. We’ve only trained together for a week. I get to know them better in every training and match.”
