Robert Lewandowski is disappointed after the Ballon d’Or award. Bayern Munich’s Polish striker finished in the prestigious election of the French football magazine France Football second behind Lionel Messi. The Argentinian suggested in his victory speech that Lewandowski would still be awarded the Ballon d’Or of 2020, but he says he himself is not very enthusiastic about the idea.

“I was disappointed, I can’t deny that,” Lewandowski says in conversation with the Polish Sportowym. “I can’t say I was happy. On the contrary, I feel sad. I was so close and competed with Messi. Of course I respect how he plays and what he has achieved. The fact that I can compete with him shows what level I have been able to achieve.”

Messi suggested in his victory speech that the 2020 Ballon d’Or should be awarded retroactively to Lewandowski. The prize was not awarded last year due to the corona pandemic. “It is an honor to fight against Lewandowski,” said Messi. “You were the winner of the Ballon d’Or last year and France Football should give you that award. You were just a winner, and you should also have the prize.”

“I don’t really get excited about that idea,” Lewandowski responds to Messi’s suggestion. “I especially wish Messi’s words were sincere and polite, from a great player. And that these were not empty words.” Lewandowski did take home the Striker of the Year title after the Ballon d’Or gala, an award that was suddenly introduced this year.
