Adam Maher thinks next summer might be a good time to take the next step in his career. The 28-year-old midfielder will then have had three seasons in the FC Utrecht shirt, after he was taken over from AZ in 2019. Despite the fact that Maher would find a step to a Dutch top club ‘beautiful’, he is rather thinking about a transfer abroad.

“Of course returning to PSV or going to Ajax would be a nice step, but I am thinking more about going abroad for the period after FC Utrecht. Perhaps next summer is a good time to take the next step. I am also the age for that. I’m 28 now,” says Maher in conversation with The Telegraph. His contract with FC Utrecht will continue until mid-2023, which means that next summer is in principle the time for the club to sell him.

Maher previously wore the shirt of a Dutch top club, as he was under contract with PSV between 2013 and 2018. “I have good memories in particular of the two championship parties,” says the five-time the Dutch international, who celebrated the national title with PSV in 2014 and 2015. “Celebrating a title with the supporters is a special experience for any player. No one can take that away from me. After that it went less, but it is and remains a great club for me.”

For Maher, a meeting with his former employer is scheduled for Saturday afternoon in Eindhoven. “I think Ajax is much better at the ball than PSV, but they have different qualities. It is a team that can score a goal out of nothing,” Maher analyzes. Where FC Utrecht won 0-1 against Ajax earlier this season, the Domstedelingen have been waiting for a victory in the Philips Stadium for 41 years. “It’s hard to say what caused that. For me it will be the first time that I play there with FC Utrecht.”
