Go Ahead Eagles has converted the away match against Willem II into a victory. Kees van Wonderen’s team won 0-1 and therefore takes eighth place in the Eredivisie. Willem II suffered the fourth loss in a row and is tenth. Boyd Lucassen became the match winner and gave Go Ahead a new chapter of the good start to the season.

Willem II, looking for the first win since September 25 (2-1 against PSV), started the game brutally. The Tilburg team looked for the attack and were close to scoring through Mats Köhlert, who headed just wide after Derrick Köhn’s preparatory work. The two players clearly had chemistry and found each other easily on the field. The greatest danger came after eighteen minutes from Köhn himself, who hit the bar with a vicious slash.

In the last fifteen minutes of the first half, Go Ahead offered better resistance. There were no goals in the first half, but shortly after the break the visitors took the lead. Luuk Brouwers headed the ball towards Martijn Berden, who reached teammate Lucassen. From a relatively difficult angle, the steamed right back charged with a diagonal shot for his first goal in the Eredivisie.

In the remainder of the game, Willem II looked for the equalizer, but the home team didn’t really shake Go Ahead. Kwasi Okyere Wriedt headed high from close range; there was talk of a final offensive, but no great opportunities. Cuco Martina made his appearance at Go Ahead in stoppage time. The 32-year-old defender has been on trial with Go Ahead for the past two weeks and signed a one-year contract on Friday. He has been clubless since his contract with Everton expired in the summer of 2020.
