SC Cambuur booked a great victory on Friday evening in the middle of the Eredivisie. The Leeuwarders managed to turn a 2-1 deficit against fellow PhD student NEC into a 2-3 win. As a result, Henk de Jong’s team rises to fourth place in the Eredivisie ranking; NEC has to settle for eighth place. Édgar Barreto scored his first goal in the Eredivisie for NEC in 14 years and 261 days.

The viewer at home was spoiled from the first whistle by referee Rob Dieperink. In minute four, the home team immediately had a huge opportunity. Bart van Rooij was able to hit freely in the penalty area, but saw his shot blocked. Barely a minute later, Issa Kallon also failed in his completion on the other side. The people of Nijmegen then took the initiative. Cambuur goalkeeper Sonny Stevens was tested twice by Ali Akman, but just saw his team take the lead. A high cross from the left was headed back excellently by Nick Doodeman and Jamie Jacobs had it for the shot: 1-0. The midfielder thus signed for his fifth goal of the current season.

Cambuur’s lead was efficient; apart from Kallon’s shot, the Leeuwarders had created little else. NEC immediately looked for the attack again and after half an hour of play finally received a wage for work. Lasse Schöne was allowed to prepare for a corner and laid it ready for the head of fellow veteran Barreto. The 37-year-old Paraguayan sent the ball perfectly to the far corner: 1-1. It marked the first Eredivisie goal for Barreto since March 10, 2007, when he found the net against Sparta Rotterdam on behalf of the same club. At 14 years and 261 days, the midfielder took over the record from Robin van Persie, who found the net on his return to Feyenoord in 2018 after 13 years and 358 days.

The record was there, the lead followed not much later. Erik Schouten thought Akman was in an offside position, but the NEC striker was not called back. The Turk was therefore able to tap Stevens unhindered for the 2-1. Until the break, little else happened. Cambuur drew strength from the break and got off to a strong start in the second company. Striker Robert Uldrikis already made it difficult for the home team’s stoppers a number of times before he signed for the equalizer. In the 52nd minute, Matthijs Branderhorst tapped a free kick by Robert Maulun at the feet of the Let, who did not hesitate for a second: 2-2. It got even worse for the people of Nijmegen.

Substitute Michael Breij tested Branderhorst from a great distance and again the goalkeeper let go. Alex Bangura was the chosen one this time to give Henk de Jong’s team the lead again: 2-3. Change was no longer on the scoreboard and so Cambuur reports in the sub-top of the Eredivisie. It is the first time in club history that the Leeuwarders win four games in a row in the highest Dutch competition.
