Heracles Almelo found his way to the top in the Eredivisie on Saturday evening. Frank Wormuth’s team had little trouble with Fortuna Sittard without star player Rai Vloet, who was involved in a fatal car accident last week: 3-1. The match came to a halt after five minutes when Heracles supporters entered the stadium with fireworks and singing. Heracles climbs to twelfth place, while Fortuna remains in the danger zone in seventeenth place.
Even before the Erve Asito was startled by the invaders, Mats Seuntjens should have scored. Fortuna’s midfielder was given the ball in complete freedom, but shot wildly over. In the fourth minute, the game came to a halt for five minutes by the stormed in, who also quickly left. Just when the gunpowder fumes had literally cleared, Heracles took the lead. In the sixth minute, Ismail Azzaoui pushed the ball from outside the penalty area into the bottom corner: 1-0.
Within three minutes, Zian Flemming put the Limburg visitors back on the same level. Heracles goalkeeper Janis Blaswich thought he could intercept a deep ball to the attacker by coming out far, but misjudged this and saw Flemming score: 1-1. Heracles then had the better of the game and Noah Fadiga broke through Fortuna’s defense after half an hour. The right back cut out Martin Angha nicely and thought he could shoot in, but saw his effort taken off the line by Mickael Tirpan.
A minute later it was still hit for the Almeloërs, when Angha just shoved the ball into the feet of Azzaoui during the defense. The attacking midfielder did not hesitate and placed the ball beautifully from the edge of the penalty area through the bottom of the bar: 2-1. Fortuna came close to scoring another equalizer in the first half, but a close-up striker from Arianit Ferati was nicely tapped out of the corner by Blaswich. The second half was significantly less spectacular. Kaj Sierhuis saw a header removed from a corner in the 65th minute. Two minutes later, the Heracles Almelo striker scored by curling a free kick through the inside of the post: 3-1. Flemming hit the crossbar with a free kick in the final phase.
