More than seven years after his retirement, Eyong Enoh still feels closely connected with Ajax. Bashan Enoh, the son of the former midfielder, plays in the youth academy for the Under 15 of the Amsterdam team. His proud father naturally hopes for a breakthrough in Ajax’s first team. “Whenever I see him play I think he’s much better than me,” Eyong Enoh told ESPN.

Bashan plays in the same vein as his father. “He’s a small, smart midfielder,” said Eyong, who is very involved in his son’s development. “He now plays freely, but from the age of sixteen or seventeen I may have to help him more. Then there will be more pressure, competition and maybe even a contract. I will help him with that.”

The 35-year-old Enoh himself now plays for Ajax Amateurs. “I keep training, I stay fit. It’s fun with the boys.” The Cameroonian has been playing for the amateur club since last summer. “I was very surprised that Ajax also had an amateur branch. The first time I trained, I immediately saw that the level of the boys was good. That was nice to notice. I enjoy it and I think my teammates like it also nice to play with me They said at the beginning: Enoh is with us, Enoh is with us!he laughs.

In addition, Enoh is also indirectly involved in the first team of Ajax 1. The 55-time international guides the African players of the club. “One of my biggest mistakes is that I didn’t learn the language quickly,” says Enoh. “When you join a new club it is important that you learn the language quickly. As a player you have to get to know the culture of the country and the club quickly. I want to help African players with that.”
