Newcastle United have almost got their new manager, reports the BBC. The Magpies are in advanced negotiations with Eddie Howe, who must guide the club up out of the Premier League relegation zone. The Englishman has been unemployed since his dismissal from Bournemouth in the 2019-20 season and will succeed Steve Bruce. Howe’s appointment follows after Newcastle United previously heard ‘no’ from, among others, Paulo Fonseca and Unai Emery.

After the names of Roberto Martínez, Frank Lampard, Lucien Favre and Erik ten Hag were also reviewed, the choice ultimately fell on Howe. The currently unemployed coach was relegated with Bournemouth from the Premier League in July 2020, after the club had played at the highest level for five years. Before that, Howe . had the Cherries personally brought to that level from League One. From the current Newcastle squad, Howe has already worked with Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser and Matt Richie at Bournemouth.

The Sun announced on Wednesday that Newcastle would turn to Howe after Emery’s rejection. On Tuesday, according to English media, everything looked like the Spaniard, who was previously at the helm at Arsenal, would make his comeback in the Premier League. It is reported that Emery could earn a monthly salary of one million euros in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, but the coach ultimately decided to give up the job. The trainer stated that he is “super happy” with Villarreal. Emery would also not like a step to Newcastle, because a clause could easily put him aside in the event of a relegation to the Championship.

Newcastle United currently dangles in penultimate place in the Premier League with four points from ten matches; no duel has yet been won. Only Norwich City is doing less with two points for the time being. After previous manager Steve Bruce got his congé at Newcastle after his thousandth game as a trainer (a 2-3 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur), interim coach Graeme Jones still managed to draw against Crystal Palace (1-1) and lost to Chelsea (0-3). Howe could be on the bench this coming Saturday, when Newcastle visit Brighton & Hove Albion.
