VfL Wolfsburg did good business in the Champions League on Tuesday. Won in the home game with Red Bull Salzburg the Wölfe 2-1, after a previous 3-1 defeat in Austria. Florian Kohfeldt, who recently succeeded the fired Mark van Bommel as trainer, is still unbeaten after his second game on the bench thanks to the victory. The Germans are in second place in Group G with five points; Salzburg remains the leader with seven points for the time being. Wout Weghorst started at Wolfsburg in the starting line-up and was taken off after 63 minutes.

Weghorst returned after two weeks of absence due to a corona infection. The Dutchman saw his team take the lead after three minutes. Left winger Yannick Gerhardt pulled the ball low and Ridle Baku had the ball at the far post for tapping: 1-0. The visitors could not live with a backlog and immediately started looking for an answer; Weghorst was at the basis of this. The striker knocked down Mohamed Camara and former Ajax player Maximilian Wöber scored the equalizer from the subsequent free kick. Of all seven Champions League goals from Salzburg so far, it was the sixth that came from a standard situation.

Ten minutes before tea, Weghorst missed a great opportunity to put his team ahead again. Another good pass from Gerhardt bounced through the toe of the striker and the ground over the goal of goalkeeper Philipp Köhn. It thus remained at 1-1 in the first company. Also in the second half, the teams left plenty of room and five minutes after the break, the Austrians almost took advantage of this. Noah Okofor sent Karim Adeyemi away, who shot eye to eye with Wolfsburg closing post Koen Casteels. The Salzburg plagues of the first game were once again a constant threat to the German defence.

After an hour, it suddenly hit the home team. A high ball from Maximilian Arnold was controlled by Lukas Nmecha, who gave Kohn no chance with a hard drive. Salzburg opened things up even further due to the backlog and therefore almost got an almost identical hit from Nmecha. However, it remained with that chance for the home team: towards the final whistle, especially the visitors came close to scoring. Okofor, among others, had a good opportunity after a mistake by John Brooks, but the equalizer did not fall.
