Cristiano Ronaldo has proven his value for the team several times since his return to Manchester United with important hits, but has not escaped the necessary criticism in England. The Portuguese star player is said to be too passive and was partly responsible for Liverpool being able to waltz over United with 0-5. Rio Ferdinand calls the criticism against Ronaldo “a disgrace and absolute disrespect”.

Ronaldo has scored four goals in his first seven Premier League appearances this season and has scored seven goals in ten appearances in all competitions. Despite this, he is accused of being too passive when his team is not in possession of the ball. Particularly during the home game against Liverpool, when manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad received an unprecedented earwash. However, according to Ferdinand, Ronaldo was not the only culprit. The former United player calls the criticisms completely unjustified.

“I’ve heard some talk and the only way I can explain it is that it’s profanity,” Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel FIVE. “I heard that Ronaldo was the reason United were not going to be successful anymore. Listen, don’t talk like that. Please, it’s a disgrace and an absolute lack of respect. Sometimes you play to people’s strengths, you can do that when you’re a superstar on your team. Ronaldo will be one of the best players in every generation you can imagine.”

On Tuesday evening, Ronaldo will face Atalanta with United in the fourth round of the Champions League. In the home game against the Italians, two weeks ago at Old Trafford, Ronaldo completed a comeback ten minutes before the end by turning a 0-2 deficit into a 3-2 victory. The attacker headed home on a pass from Luke Shaw. United currently lead Group F with six points from three games. Villarreal and Atalanta follow with four points, Young Boys close the row with one win.
