Antonio Conte is the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur, according to transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano. The Italian coach is the successor to Nuno Espírito Santo, who was sacked on Monday as a result of disappointing performances in recent weeks. Conte, who was employed in his homeland at Internazionale until May this year, will sign a contract until mid-2023 on Tuesday, starting his second job as manager in England, having previously spent two seasons at Chelsea.

Conte left Internazionale at the end of last season, after giving the club its first league title since 2010. In his previous period in England, the trainer also managed to become champions of the Premier League with Chelsea in 2017. The following year he won with the Blues also the FA Cup, beating Manchester United 1-0 in the final. Because the Londoners finished in a disappointing fifth place in the ranking at the end of that season, Conte was fired by chairman Roman Abramovich at the time. Last week, Conte was named as the successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United, while he was previously also associated with the managerial position at ambitious Newcastle United.

Due to the disappointing performance, Espírito Santo has been under pressure at Tottenham for some time. After Saturday’s 0-3 home defeat to Manchester United, there was widespread discontent among fans of the London club, after which chairman Daniel Levy and technical director Fabio Paratici met with the rest of the board to discuss the possible dismissal of the Portuguese. Tottenham issued a press release on Monday morning announcing the resignation. Espírito Santo only joined Tottenham Hotspur this summer after a successful tenure at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Conte will be reunited in London with Paratici, with whom he previously worked at Juventus. Tottenham’s sporting director wanted to bring in Conte in June and was eventually able to convince him of a return to England. The Spurs currently occupy a disappointing eighth place in the Premier League with just 15 points from 10 games. They are now ten points behind leaders Chelsea. The home game against Vitesse in the European Conference League is scheduled for Thursday. It is expected that Conte will already be on the bench as the new manager during that game.
