The increasing degree of disturbances around football matches has also not gone unnoticed by Barbara Visser. The Minister of Infrastructure was informed on Sunday morning during WNL on Sunday asked for her opinion and had a clear message for the malicious fans. Visser herself is a supporter of Feyenoord and she also sometimes visits a match of that club, she says in the broadcast.

“Football is just a day out for me,” says Visser when she is asked to give an opinion about the disturbances. “I am a fan of Feyenoord myself, but sometimes go to AZ – Feyenoord. There is nothing more beautiful than the atmosphere in a stadium and to watch live football there with a lot of people. If you see this, then you ruin it for so much people. For children who are in that stadium and just want to enjoy a day out with their father or mother.”

The program showed images of the riots at MVV Maastricht – Roda JC, in which at least eight people were injured on Friday: six police officers and two Roda stewards. Ten rioters have been arrested. It also went wrong on Saturday evening in the stands of Erve Asito, where supporters of Heracles Almelo and Ajax clashed with each other. “We need all those police officers so badly in other places,” Visser continues. “Football should be something beautiful and fun again. Please go to kickboxing or do I know a lot. Find a sport and enjoy yourself, but not there.”

The unrest surrounding the stadiums in professional football is a thorn in the side for the KNVB, among others. On Monday, the football association will meet with the police, mayors and the judiciary for emergency consultations to discuss the recent series of incidents with supporters. The Public Prosecution Service has announced that it is investigating the possibilities of tracing and prosecuting the rioters of the duel between MVV and Roda. The game was stopped after 42 minutes by referee Joey Kooij by order of the mayor of Maastricht.
