Vitesse provided a resounding surprise against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday evening. Thomas Letsch’s team settled 1-0 in the GelreDome Stadium, which was sold out for the first time in seven years, with the Londoners, who played with a full B-team. The winning goal was scored by Maximilian Wittek, who once again showed his beautiful kicking technique and completed it. Vitesse (six points) climbs over Tottenham (four points) in Group G to second place. Stade Rennes won 1-2 against NS Mura and is at the top with seven points, while the Slovenians remain scoreless.

At Vitesse, Matús Bero was preferred over Yann Ghobo; otherwise the same players started as against NEC (0-1 win). Tottenham therefore appeared in an entire B formation without Hugo Lloris, Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son, among others. Steven Bergwijn made his first minutes as a basic player since his return from an ankle injury. The possibilities were in the opening phase for Vitesse.

Nikolai Baden Frederiksen shot Pierluigi Gollini after a cross by Loïs Openda from a difficult corner, while Jacob Rasmussen headed just wide from a corner. After Vitesse’s hopeful start, neither team became dangerous for a moment in the first half. Tottenham made themselves heard for the first time a minute after the break, when Bryan Gil placed the ball from about eighteen meters on the bottom of the bar.

The English remained dutiful and Vitesse took the initiative. After more than an hour of play, the Arnhem team released Elazar Dasa on the right side. The wing defender lashed out hard from about sixteen meters and saw his effort skim past the intersection. Dasa then tried again from about thirty meters and saw Gollini grab the ball tightly. In the 79th minute the ball finally fell for Vitesse. Wittek suddenly took a pass from Dasa from the edge of the penalty area out of the air: 1-0. Tottenham made a desperate attempt to make up for it, but did not become more dangerous.
