NEC was surprised to learn of the statements made by Mayor Hubert Bruls of Nijmegen on Wednesday, the club said in an official statement. The mayor of Nijmegen spoke about the disturbances after the NEC – Vitesse, but spoke out of turn, according to the Eredivisionist. A first evaluation is planned with the quadrangle on Thursday.
Bruls expressed himself in the media against the agreement about the disturbances and the perpetrators. “Enough is enough”, Bruls suggested the Gelderlander. “What happened before, during and after the game is a disgrace to our city. As far as I am concerned, anyone caught on Sunday will receive a lifelong stadium and environment ban. If not, I will revoke NEC’s permit.” Bruls’ statements have been completely wrong with NEC, which feels compelled to come up with a response.
“First of all, we would like to emphasize once again that what happened last Sunday is absolutely unacceptable. We have stated this several times in recent days and there can be no misunderstanding about it. Not even to the mayor,” said a spokesperson for the club. “We were therefore surprised to learn of his statements tonight. With such texts we anticipate the evaluation that has yet to take place and expectations are imposed with very far-reaching consequences. We don’t think that’s the intention.”
According to NEC, there will now be extra pressure on the conversation with the quadrangle. “As NEC, we communicated from the outset that we did not want to get ahead of ourselves and not jump to conclusions,” the statement continued. “We stick to that. These kinds of matters should first be discussed in the quadrangle. That makes sense, because that’s how you should communicate with each other and not in public. That’s how we are used to working at NEC. That is why we are not going into this situation any further at the moment. General director Wilco van Schaik will join the quadrangle this week and start the conversation there.”
