It is not yet Wout Weghorst’s season. The VfL Wolfsburg striker has scored only three times in the Bundesliga this season and has remained dry in the last three games. The striker also failed to score in the international matches of the Dutch national team against Latvia and Gibraltar. Mark van Bommel also noticed the dip in form. The coach demands more from his striker and does not rule out a possible reserve role.

The last time Weghorst managed to find the net on behalf of Wolfsburg was a month ago in the home game against Eintracht Frankfurt. “As a striker you need a certain instinct”, Van Bommel explained again during the press conference on Thursday. That instinct was certainly present at Weghorst last season, when he managed to find the net 20 times in 34 games. This season it is not yet running, with the away game against Borussia Mönchengladbach being illustrative. After the 1-3 defeat, Weghorst dived into the catacombs, yelling and cursing.

“We have talked about it,” Van Bommel continues. “Wout has three goals and there should be more. But sometimes things don’t go the way you want with a striker. If the team plays well and wins, the form will return automatically. He must remain calm.” With a possible reserve role, Lukas Nmecha seems the most likely replacement for Weghorst. The German showed his value last week in the friendly match against Hamburger SV (4-1) with three goals. “Wout would accept it”, was all Van Bommel wanted to say about a possible spare role.

If Weghorst succeeds in signing for his fourth of the season against 1. FC Union Berlin on Saturday, that will immediately mean a special one for him. In that case, he will be level with Diego Klimowicz on the club’s all-time top scorers list. The Argentina-born striker scored 57 goals on behalf of Wolfsburg between 2001 and 2007. Only Grafite (59 goals) and Edin Dzeko (60 goals) were more accurate.
