Nasser El Khayati thinks Moroccan-Dutch footballers can take steps when it comes to dealing with criticism. At the moment, Oussama Tannane is on a collision course with Vitesse and, according to El Khayati, that may also be partly because the Vitesse attacker cannot handle criticism well. The now 32-year-old clubless midfielder admits that he also struggled to deal with this in his younger years and recognizes himself in Tannane.

“Tannane is just like me a Dutch boy with a Moroccan background,” says El Khayati at football talk. “Fortunately, I found out very early on that we can’t take criticism very well. I say ‘we’, because I also had that in my younger years.” The creative midfielder admits that Moroccan boys are very ‘proud’. “That’s good too, because when we talk about football, we always feel the best. Usually we are the technical guys who score goals and provide assists. Ultimately you also have to have a return, because then you are important for the club and the trainer.”

“You just have to be able to deal with criticism,” says El Khayati. “I don’t know the exact story of what happened between him and the coach or with players, but he’s a great player, isn’t he?” Both parties are currently negotiating the financial settlement of Tannane’s contract termination. El Khayati, former tastemaker of ADO Den Haag, indicates that the switch has turned on himself in England. “I was with Kozak Boys and then at the age of 24 I made the switch to Burton Albion, a relatively small club led by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. He really taught me how to handle criticism better. I really think this is the biggest problem for Moroccan footballers.”

Willem van Hanegem added on Sunday ESPN opposite Hans Kraay Jr. to find a ‘kwibus’ at Tannane. “How stupid can you be when you have so many qualities and then you… god damn whining and whining with everyone. He has been whining at all the clubs. Then I think: then you should take a look at yourself.” Tannane was previously removed from the selection at Heracles Almelo after multiple incidents and disciplinary suspensions, but then also returned and earned a transfer to AS Saint-Etienne. Van Hanegem hopes that Tannane will repent. “Later you realize it, when you haven’t baked anything… Then you will regret it so much. Playing football is the most beautiful thing there is, you would like to do it until you are fifty. And then you throw it all away. ”
