Vitesse failed to achieve a result in the Conference League against Stade Rennes on Thursday evening. Thomas Letsch’s team was able to keep up with the French opponent in the first half, but had to bow after the break: 1-2. Kamaldeen Sulemana came in at halftime and made the difference on behalf of Stade Rennes. Even when the visitors ended up with one man less twenty minutes before the end, Vitesse did not have a point left in the game.

At Vitesse, in the run-up to the duel with Rennes, it was mainly about Oussama Tannane, who was removed from the selection by Letsch and is not welcome at the Arnhem team for the time being. He is also not there on Sunday when Vitesse receives Feyenoord. Also at Rennes a conspicuous absentee at the kick-off, as Sulemana had to settle for a place on the reserve bench. The reserve role was presumably due to the team playing against Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1 next weekend. Sulemana would eventually be brought in in the second half.

Vitesse started the game remarkably well and also recorded the best opportunities in the initial phase. A header by Loïs Openda after a cross by Danilho Doekhi, however, only just missed the left post. A shot by Matús Bero on Openda’s pass also did not yield a goal. On the other side, Rennes came out dangerously via Serhou Guirassy, who shot just wide after a smooth attack. After half an hour of play, Vitesse took the lead after all. After a cross from the right of Openda, Maximilian Wittek made an excellent effort from the bottom of the bar: 1-0.

With Sulemana, among others, as a fresh force, the game image completely tilted in the second half. The French came out dangerous at times and that led to the equalizer after five minutes. Goalkeeper Markus Schubert attacked the escaped Loum Tchaouna and saw referee Kevin Clancy point to the spot. Guirassy took advantage of the opportunity and Rennes shot alongside: 1-1. After Bazoer was injured, Vitesse received the next blow twenty minutes before time. Sulemana received the ball at the far post, controlled controlled and found the far corner with a watched shot: 1-2.

Just before that, Sulemana had already hit the inside of the post with a shot. Vitesse barely seemed upset by the deficit and came up with one man more fifteen minutes before the end, when Loïc Badé took the much too fast Openda and received his second yellow card. Not much later, Openda had the perfect opportunity to shoot Vitesse next to Rennes, but his shot on Eli Dasa’s pass went past the left post. Vitesse has been waiting for a home win for three matches due to the defeat and can try to change that against Feyenoord on Sunday.
