Louis van Gaal was not alone along the line against Jong AZ on Friday evening to help Telstar to a victory. The trainer was mainly concerned with raising money for Spieren voor Spieren, the charity for which he and his wife are ambassadors. After the 1-0 victory, Van Gaal said he was happy with the proceeds, which were increased by thousands of euros by clothing from the trainer.

Ticket sales for the duel in the Kitchen Champion Division already brought in a considerable amount. There were almost three thousand spectators present in Velsen. “A lot of money has also been raised for charity. It could not be better. I am very happy with it”, said Van Gaal afterwards during the press conference. According to Football International the proceeds increased even further due to an auction. The trainer’s tracksuit was paid 3,700 euros, while a sweater and raincoat went under the hammer for 1,000 and 1,300 euros respectively.

Telstar won the match with a goal from Glynor Plet in the ninth minute. “I find it unbelievable what that Plet can still do at that age, 34 years old. He brings so much more. Central defenders Siebe Vandermeulen and Anwar Bensabouh were also remarkably strong in the 5-3-2 system,” said Van Gaal, who also complimented goalkeeper Ronald Koeman Jr. “That is an important player as a goalkeeper. He can achieve a lot of goals with his kicking technique. We also trained for that. That players had to indicate to him where they wanted the ball. That actually worked very well. Koeman has made an important contribution.”
