Jurriën Timber will not kick off on Tuesday evening in Ajax’s away match against Fortuna Sittard. The twenty-year-old defender initially had a basic place in the heart of the defense in the team of trainer Erik ten Hag, but had to drop out in the warm-up with an apparently minor injury as yet unknown. Perr Schuurs is his replacement in Sittard and forms the central duo with Lisandro Martínez.

Mike Verweij, Ajax watcher for The Telegraph, reported towards the end of the warm-up that there had been consultations between Timber, Ten Hag and the club doctor of Ajax. It was then decided that Schuurs would participate in the final part of the warm-up and five minutes before kick-off Ajax communicates that Schuurs will replace Timber in the starting eleven. It means a special match for Schuurs, because he went through Fortuna’s youth academy and was removed from Sittard by Ajax in 2018.

“You saw Timber consult with the doctor a bit, with a resigned look. From: it’s just not in it. He has a bit of trouble. Not very bad, by the way,” says ESPN reporter Jan Joost van Gangelen from Sittard. “By the way, Timber is on the couch, with minor complaints. In the context of privacy, we cannot say what exactly that is.” Freek Jansen, Ajax watcher for Football International, reports that Timber is ill.
