Frank de Boer was able to give the failed European Championship and his departure as national coach of the Dutch national team a place earlier this summer. The former defender reveals on Saturday in conversation with the General Newspaper also that he has been in contact with his successor, Louis van Gaal. “It’s over, I’ve given it a place.”
“Enough time has now passed. We move on to the order of the day. Of course it is difficult. You have a certain idea about how you are going to experience such a tournament. In my dreams it wasn’t like that, anyway…” A place in the quarter-finals of the European Championship was a requirement to continue. The the Dutch squad did not achieve that goal because the tournament ended in the eighth finals with an inglorious 0-2 defeat against the Czech Republic.
De Boer was under contract with the KNVB until the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which then ended up with Van Gaal for the third time. “I have very good contact with Van Gaal and have also spoken to him. I’m really happy he’s doing really well, we all know he’s a top trainer. If I wish it on someone, it is certainly Louis”, emphasizes De Boer.
De Boer was only fifteen international national coach of the Dutch national team. That resulted in eight wins, four draws and three defeats. Under the 112-time international, the the Dutch stranded in the group stage of the Nations League last year and made a false start in Turkey (4-2) on March 24 in the World Cup qualifier.
Previously, De Boer, who as a trainer became champion with Ajax four times, had no success at Internazionale and Crystal Palace. He was sacked from the Serie A club after 84 days and from the Premier League club he had to leave after 77 days. He was then employed by the American Atlanta United for a year and a half, after which he also had little success with the the Dutch.
