Yorbe Vertessen scored an important goal for PSV against AZ on Saturday evening (0-3 win). The attacker was given a short substitute and shot the team from Eindhoven to a 0-2 lead, which took the pressure off his team. Vertessen gets in the studio of ESPN compliments for his goal from Kenneth Perez.

Vertessen outsmarted Bruno Martins Indi in a head-to-head duel and shot the ball from the right side of the penalty area into the far corner. “I think he has specific qualities,” says Perez. “His speed is of course an incredible weapon, we also saw that in the Johan Cruijff Scale. But I found with him: his way of finishing is often a bit perfunctory, from: I do shoot on target, but there was no real idea behind it. He was released against Benfica, for example, but then he shot at goal in the hope that the ball will go in.”

Saturday, according to Perez, was different. “Now he really consciously finishes it. He goes to the right for a moment and shoots it diagonally to the right of the keeper. This is a really good goal. I think he had it very easy in youth too. Long ball, and then…” Arnold Bruggink picks up on that and says: “Do you know who gave him all those long balls? Mohamed Ihattaren. With the two of us, that was a golden duo in the A1 at PSV,” said the former attacker, who is not yet fully convinced of Vertessen. “If he only comes to the keeper and has time, then he still does pretty crazy things, I think.”

Vertessen himself also came in front of the camera of ESPN. The Belgian attacker scored his goal on intuition. “Every situation is different,” said Vertessen. “At the time it seemed like the right choice to me and it works out well, nice goal. I went on the field with the idea of trying to help the team and trying to score that second goal. And I do, so that’s only a nice bonus. AZ was pressing well, we had a hard time. It was a relief that the second goal was scored.”

For the time being, Vertessen has to make do with a spare role at PSV. “It’s never easy to come in, but I have to be grateful for every minute. And try to score as many as possible or give assists. I’m just doing my thing. I know my chance will come if I keep performing. I just try to do my best and stay positive.”
