Mario Götze chose earlier this week to extend his expiring contract with PSV by two years, which means that he is now connected to the Eindhoven team until mid-2024. The 29-year-old German attacking midfielder rejected ‘some clubs with serious interest’. It Eindhovens Dagblad writes that Götze had an exit clause in his previous contract, which allowed him to easily leave PSV.

“In the final days of the transfer window, several clubs have shown serious interest in him. Some of them are active in the main draw of the Champions League. Despite his wish to play on that stage, Mario chooses PSV. He wants to win trophies with the club. We share that ambition and we are obviously very happy that he sees his future here,” said director of football affairs John de Jong on the PSV website about Götze’s contract extension. The interested clubs could have picked him up for a relatively low amount due to the exit clause.

It Eindhovens Dagblad states that according to that clause PSV should have sold Götze for ‘a few million’ to a Champions League club, if he had wanted that himself. However, the regional newspaper writes that Götze ‘smells sporting opportunities’ at PSV, ‘where financially things are a little more difficult than before’. This is possible because with Cody Gakpo and Noni Madueke there is ‘plenty of capital on the field’ and it soon becomes clear what is possible through the financial injection of top commissioner Robert van der Wallen.

Van der Wallen must in any case provide more financial space. PSV now hopes to extend Armando Obispo’s contract soon. According to the Eindhovens Dagblad is also on the wish list for the long term with trainer Roger Schmidt. The German coach has a contract until the summer of 2022, which means that in the current situation he will leave Eindhoven after this season.
