Rafael van der Vaart considers Memphis Depay to be the absolute star of the Dutch against Montenegro (4-0 win). The analyst of the NOS knows that the striker of the Dutch national team is often criticized and therefore breaks a lance for him. “Others often criticize, and that is partly due to his attitude,” says Van der Vaart.

Depay was important by scoring the first two goals. “I’m a fan of his,” continues Van der Vaart. “He creates for us, always and in every game. Today I have seen again moments of the ‘old’ Memphis, or the Memphis of Barcelona. We need such a player. He creates opportunities, gives and is always busy: he’s not one to be lazy either.” Van der Vaart highlights Depay’s individual action with which he decorated a penalty, by cleverly turning away from his direct opponent. “This action is just world class. Of course not smartly done by that defender, but you do need that action.”

Van der Vaart believes that Depay should be looked at a little more leniently. “You just have to let him go a bit. I understand that a lot of people are annoyed to death, but not me. If he hadn’t been there, who should do it?”, said the former midfielder, who is supported by Pierre van haydonk. “That is exactly what it is: if he is not there, and he was not there last game against the Norwegians, you will immediately see that in the result.”

“Then there may also be criticism,” says Van der Vaart. “That’s the way it is, if you are the best you will also get criticism. But I do think that if he plays like today, then we have to say that too.” Louis van Gaal also praises Depay afterwards. “In my eyes, I hardly dare to say it, the star was Memphis Depay,” said the national coach. “It’s unbelievable what he’s run. I think he’s run 11 kilometers.”
