Tottenham Hotspur has dissolved its contractual partnership with Serge Aurier. The 28-year-old defender’s contract expired next summer. Although Aurier would have liked to have left the Londoners only at the end of the season, the club opted for a premature farewell. The Ivorian international was the main casualty of Emerson Royal’s transfer to Tottenham on the last day of the summer transfer window.

Tottenham and Barcelona made the transfer of Emerson for 25 million euros to London official on Tuesday evening. Japhet Tanganga was already preferred to Aurier as right back in the first games of this season and the arrival of Emerson made the situation of the Ivorian quite hopeless.

“I really enjoyed my time at Tottenham,” said Aurier, who played 110 games in all competitions in four seasons. “I would like to thank the club and the fans. Now is the time to take on a new challenge.” Tottenham also said goodbye to players such as Danny Rose, Erik Lamela, Moussa Sissoko and Toby Alderweireld in the final period of the transfer market.

Aurier made the switch from Paris Saint-Germain to Tottenham in the summer of 2017 for 25 million euros. It is unclear where he will continue his career. French media write that he is in talks with Al-Rayyan from Qatar, but Spartak Moscow would also like to attract the defender.
