Jetro Willems will play for Greuther Fürth for the next two seasons, the German club announced through the official channels. The 27-year-old left-back has signed a two-year contract with the Bundesliga PhD student. Willems was transfer-free after his departure from Eintracht Frankfurt this summer.

“With Jetro we are bringing in a very experienced fullback who wants to find his way up again after a difficult time,” explains Sport General Director Rachid Azzouzi. “With his way of playing football, he fits very well into our profile of requirements for the left back position.” Trainer Stefan Leitl is also happy with Willems’ arrival: “Jetro is a very good footballer, has seen the urge to move forward and in football. This means that we now also have a good competitive situation in the left-back position,” says Leitl.

It has been a year and a half since Willems last played an official game. Fate struck on January 18, 2020, when the left-back tore his anterior cruciate ligament. Willems played at that time on a rental basis for Newcastle United, which had temporarily taken over from Eintracht Frankfurt. Willems had an undisputed starting place at Newcastle and saw his adventure come to an unfortunate end after nineteen league games.

Willems worked on his recovery for a year and returned to the competition selection of Eintracht in January of this year. However, outgoing trainer Adi Hütter did not appreciate his presence and did not use him once in the past six months. This meant that Willems was not given a farewell duel. The wing defender was taken over from PSV in 2017 for 4.5 million euros.
