Mark van Bommel is not yet resigned to the elimination of VfL Wolfsburg in the DFB-Pokal. The trainer will personally travel to the headquarters of the German Football Association on Thursday to pull off a rematch. Wolfsburg was recently thrown out of the cup after Van Bommel made a substitution too much against Preussen Münster in extra time.

Wolfsburg won in the first round of the DFB-Pokal after extra time, but the joy about extending the cup adventure was not there. Van Bommel had used a total of six substitutions, while the maximum is five substitutions in the cup tournament. According to kicker Referee Christian Dingert mentioned the violation in his match report. The rules of the DFB state that “five substitutions are possible in the new season” and that “an extra substitution in the extension is not allowed”. quickly turned into a regular 2-0 defeat, much to the disappointment of Van Bommel and associates.

The Wolfsburg board did not give up and soon announced that it would appeal against the sanction. The case is therefore this Thursday in Frankfurt, with Van Bommel who will give his side of the story to the football association. The Wolfsburg leadership rules that the arbitration should have intervened at the sixth substitution, while the disciplinary committee takes the position that the fault really lies with Van Bommel himself.

Wolfsburg is betting on replaying the match in the first round against Preussen Münster, which itself is not waiting for a replay of the game in the national cup tournament. Playing a match in the second round has the necessary financial advantages and they want to use that money to strengthen the selection. A possible replay against Wolfsburg will only take place after the close of the transfer market, so that no more purchases can be made.
