Ajax midfielder Edson Álvarez escaped a red card in the match against FC Twente on Sunday afternoon. After more than half an hour of play, the Mexican tapped opponent Michal Sadílek on the back of the head, who in turn went to the ground. Referee Dennis Higler missed the moment, but the VAR did not intervene either. Twente coach Ron Jans showed his dissatisfaction on the sidelines.

Ajax had a particularly difficult time in the first half on Sunday afternoon with FC Twente, which was very close to the visitors from the first minute. Higler had already punished Davy Klaassen with yellow after a swinging arm in the face of Giovanni Troupée. After fouls from both sides, Álvarez crossed the line in the 34th minute. He emerged as the winner in a duel with Sadílek, after which Ajax sought the attack. Out of sight of Higler, Álvarez struck the Twente midfielder. Higler put the game on hold on the advice of VAR, but was not called to the side to assess the incident.

The moment when Álvarez can’t control himself.

Ronald de Boer went into halftime at the time of both Klaassen and Álvarez. According to the former international, both Ajax players have escaped red. Klaassen is getting away with it quite well. He doesn’t do it consciously, but he punches away and hits him full in the face. This could have just been red,” said De Boer after the first half ESPN. “The same goes for Álvarez. You just have to keep your feet off someone. He gives him a very small nudge, a tap on the back of the head. Sadílek makes the most of it, but that’s smart. You just shouldn’t do it.”
