Despite the explicit interest of Stade Rennes, Edson Álvarez can also be admired in the shirt of Ajax this season. The 23-year-old Mexican reacts for the first time to the transfer troubles in an interview with the club channel. Álvarez is a lot less concerned about bouncing a transition than he was in January, he reveals.

Erik ten Hag absolutely did not want to let Álvarez go and Marc Overmars rejected an offer of twenty million euros from Stade Rennes. “The knowledge that he wants to keep me is important to me. I promise to continue in the same way,” says Álvarez, who wanted to leave in January. “At that time I was looking into the option to leave for Valencia, because I wanted to play. They gave me the opportunity to play. As we know, Ajax did not want to cooperate then. Now they do not want me to leave for France. But now I also wanted to stay here.”

During the interview, Álvarez reads out some internet reactions from Ajax supporters. In one of them he is praised for his role as a ‘vacuum cleaner’. “That appreciation is nice,” said the defensive midfielder. “It is important to deal with it properly. There is a danger that you will become confused and start to believe that you are at your best now. I am not bothered by that now, on the contrary. I feel that there are still there’s a lot to improve on. These reactions fuel me.”

Álvarez realizes that he brings different qualities to the squad than most of his teammates. “At Ajax you need different types of football players, but certainly also players you can always count on. I know my job. I am happy with what I bring to the team.” Álvarez is happy with the positive reactions he gets, but normally doesn’t read them of his own accord. “Football is like a roller coaster. If you do well, you go up. If you do poorly, you go down. Often these kinds of comments just distract you, so I try not to read them.”
