Feyenoord has urged its supporters to “abide by the corona measures and to remain in their permanent place in De Kuip” during the home game against Go Ahead Eagles next Sunday. With this, the Rotterdammers are responding to the statements of caretaker minister Hugo de Jonge (Public Health), who warned on Friday that the measures may be tightened if the football supporters do not take their seats properly next weekend.

“It should be better this coming weekend than it was last weekends. If people do not just sit, and the stadiums are not filled for a maximum of two thirds, that may be a reason to tighten the measures again,” said De Jonge. “Placed must be really placed. If you all clump together, that is not the case.” De Jonge hoped that intervention will not be necessary: ”We don’t want that. We just want beautiful things, such as football, to be enjoyed again.”

Those statements are reason for Feyenoord to address the supporters in a statement. The Rotterdammers announce that all sections will be open and in use, in order to better spread the fans across the stadium. Since standing places are not allowed, the seats in the rail seats will be folded out in the compartments where the supporters normally stand.

“Feyenoord urges supporters to adhere to the corona measures on Sunday and to remain in their permanent place in De Kuip”, Feyenoord makes an urgent appeal to its fans. “Back to the situation without or with less audience is not desirable for anyone, but it is a scenario that threatens if the exceptional position that professional football currently still has is handled incorrectly. We (finally) reunite; let’s cherish that privilege together!”

Earlier this month, the outgoing cabinet decided that full stadiums for professional football matches may be allowed again from 20 September. The two-thirds capacity limit at an open-air event will then be released. However, this relaxation can only continue if the corona infections remain manageable and the vaccination rate continues to rise. A decision will be made on 17 September whether it is responsible to take this step.
