Lasse Schöne has announced his retirement as an international. The 35-year-old Danish midfielder of NEC says on Instagram that he has said it. Schöne came to a total of 51 caps for the national team of Denmark in twelve years.

“After twelve years of representing my country, it is time to say goodbye,” Schöne wrote on social media. “It was a great adventure and I am proud to have played more than fifty matches. From training to the European Championships and the World Cup, it was always a huge honour.”

Schöne made his debut in the national team in 2009 while playing for NEC. The midfielder was a permanent fixture in the Danish selection for years. He was active in the European Championship of 2012 and World Cup of 2018. In March of this year, he played his last international match against Moldova (8-0). National coach Kasper Hjulmand did not include him in the Danish selection for the last European Championship.

“51 games in red and white. Always positive. Always top professional. Always a role model,” the Danish Football Association reacts on social media to Schöne’s decision. “Thank you so much for the many good memories and the wonderful moments during your many years with the national team.”
