Leroy Sané has undergone an impressive physical transformation, Lothar Matthäus concludes. The club icon of Bayern Munich ran into Sané in the center of Munich last week and started a conversation. “He looked very muscular. I think he was a Goretzka does,” Matthäus laughs to the tabloid Tzu.

Matthäus refers to Leon Goretzka, Sané’s teammate at Bayern Munich, who caused a sensation last year with the muscle mass he built up during the lockdown. The fact that Bayern pays a lot of attention to strength training was also apparent from the transformations of Robert Lewandowski and Alphonso Davies, among others. Comparing recent photos of Sane with older shots of the attacker at his previous club Manchester City can indeed see some physical progress.

During their get-together, Matthäus also spoke to Sané about his disappointing performance at Bayern last season and with Germany at the European Championship. “He is very self-critical and knows he can do better,” said the former midfielder. “He has now closed the European Championship. He knows that he played badly and is now full of energy. This could be his year.”

Sane joined from Manchester City last year for at least €45 million and produced 10 goals and 12 assists in 44 appearances for Bayern in his first season. “He has to take more responsibility, defend more, deliver more goals and more assists,” Matthäus said. “He has to perform constantly and also give home in big games. He has to find an answer to all criticism.”
